The JEA Smart Savings pilot program and is modeled after plans that have been successfully implemented by other utility companies. The primary difference between this program and a standard residential fixed-rate program is the removal of the fixed $/kWh fee charged on the total amount of energy you consume per month. Aside from non-energy fees that are shared between all programs, the new program charges you for two “peak” periods of consumption which define your monthly bill. Peak periods are measured in 15-minute intervals and you are billed for two peak intervals over a one month period. Below is JEA’s example for how they define and calculate the peak periods. The reason JEA is piloting this program and hopes many customers will find it valuable is described in detail in my “Energy 101!” Blog entry. Essentially, customers reducing their peak consumption helps utilities manage their resources better keeping costs down for everyone. This program is JEA’s way to pass on those savings. The “Explore Savings” calculator details exactly how much you could save buy combining one of our products with the new Smart Savings program.
